Melissa J. L. Smith has played an integral role in the entertainment industry. With management skills in studio operations, postproduction sound, project management, branding and employee enhancement initiatives, Melissa subscribes to the belief that “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Melissa was on the project teams for the redesign of Sony's Postproduction Facilities, which encompasses 25% of the 44-acre lot of the former MGM Studios, the renovation of the world-class Cary Grant Theatre, and was on the 5-person team who created and developed Sony Dynamic Digital Sound (SDDS) for 100s of theaters.
Additionally, Melissa was the head of the Walt Disney Imagineering Sound Department. Changing the business model to migrate from cost-center status to profit-center by providing exceptional customer service, maximizing client opportunities and creating a welcoming environment for actors, directors and other talent.
The additional income also enabled a pathway to capital improvements including the renovation of the Circle-Vision mix stage. Circle-Vision 360° is a film technique that uses nine cameras for nine big screens arranged in a circle. Inside the circle, the audience "travels" through cities and highways as the picture and sound deliver an immersive experience.
Melissa's projects have incorporated multi-level scheduling, finance, reconciliation, vaulting and archiving programs that streamline studio resources, staff and crew, asset management and tracking of multi-million-dollar capital and overhead budgets at The Walt Disney Company, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures Studios, Lorimar-Telepictures, Columbia Pictures and Warner Bros. Studios.
"There were twelve Melissa Smiths at The Walt Disney Company. We were getting each other's mail and phone calls, so we found ways to differentiate ourselves. Some changed the spelling of their names. I used my two initials and it just stuck. There are over 25 Melissa Smiths on IMDb, and over 10 authors named "Melissa Smith" on Amazon, so the two middle initials are helpful."
